Netizens gain interest in ‘Yong singer/songwriter idols’ for their outstanding musical talent

Many idols have been stereotyped and got a bad rep for being little more than marginally talented singers who follow their company’s lead. They’re thought to produce little of what they actually sing, however, a recent spike of ’singer-songwriters’ idols have been changing netizens’ perceptions of what it actually means to be an idol.

Artists such as G-Dragon, Jung Yong Hwa, Yong Jun Hyung, and Bang Yong Guk have caught particular attention thanks to how they produce and compose some, if not the majority of, their music.

Big Bang’s G-Dragon has part of many compositions, the most recent being his collaborative track with comedian Park Myung Soo for the sleeper hit “I Cheated“. Meanwhile, CN BLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa has been writing his own music since his rookie days, including “Love Light“, “Imagine“, and “Love Girl“.

As for B2ST’s Jun Hyung, his freestyle rapping skills netted attention early, and rookie Bang Yong Guk had enough confidence in his composing skills to use a self-composed track as his debut single.

Netizens also paid attention to the names of the artists; specifically, how they all included ‘Yong 용’ (G-Dragon’s real name is Kwon Ji Yong). One netizen made the wisecrack, “One must have skills in songwriting if they have a Yong in their name.”
Another netizen stated, “When I have a son later, I’ll definitely give him a name with Yong in it.
