Chile's main newspaper has started paying attention to the K-Pop phenomenon.
JYJ arrived in Chile on March 8th (local time), 4:30AM for their solo concert, which will was held on March 9th. Their arrival was reported extensively in one of the country's main newspapers, Las Ultimas Noticias.
Las Ultimas Noticias has the highest readership in Chile, and is accordingly considered to be an influential newspaper in public trends. This time, they allocated a page to the coverage of JYJ's arrival.
The article was titled "Going crazy because of Korean group JYJ." It stated, "JYJ, who has scaled the world's peak, has arrived in Chile after forty hours of travelling. Police had to be called because of their fans who have been waiting for them in spite of the early hours."
The article also mentioned JYJ's Facebook page, and that JYJ's transport was delayed because of the fans' fervour. It expressed surprise that so many people were passionate over Asian singers.
While it has always been known that K-Pop has a dedicated fan base in South America, it is clear that K-Pop singers now have the kind of visibility to attract attention from such influential newspapers.
Previously, JYJ had said in their local press conference that "many people, not just fans, have started to listen to Korean music. We're at the stage where the general public has started paying attention to K-Pop."
JYJ's first South American concert opened on March 9th in Santiago.
