KARA’s new single “Step” plagiarized?

Girl group KARA just released their new single “Step“ on the 6th and, while they are blowing up the music charts, they are also receiving much attention for possible plagiarism at the same time.
KARA has just made a comeback with “Step”, and it is the first single they’ve released in nearly a year. After much debate and complications with their agency, they have finally decided to release the song and the song is bright and cheery to match the girls’ attitudes towards their new album.

Netizens are claiming, however, that the melody sounds too much like Joan Osborne‘s “One of Us“. They suspect that the producers identically copied the melody of “One of Us”. Some netizens even posted the two music videos side by side online to be compared.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time KARA has gone under fire for suspect plagiarism. Their hit track “Lupin” was also called out, however it seems like this time the controversy with “Step” will soon die off. One professional remarked, “In order for a song to be considered plagiarized, it needs to contain the same few lines of lyrics as well as the same rhythm. Granted it sounds similar, but it isn’t enough to be considered plagiarism.”

Most people agree. There were not many who were shocked or even noticed the similarties between the two songs, and some believe that this shouldn’t even be an issue. Netizens commented, “No one knows who started this, but stop trying to ruin KARA with nonsense that has no solid proof to back it up.”
